Can I buy the materials and just pay for labor?
No. There are some contractors or handymen that are wiling to work like that. It's not as simple as many people think. When purchasing materials, there's sourcing, inspecting for defects, confirming quantities, confirming sizes, items match, delivering, and staging the materials. Also, part of purchasing materials comes the responsibility of running for addition materials should something come up or a change order is needed. The other thing to consider, is what if the materials fail. If purchased by the contractor the materials are part of job and therefore are part of the warranty.
Can I pay by the hour?
Some jobs call for time and materials. Which is a little different than what people usually mean when they ask that question. Most projects are bid per project.
Why do contractors change their price once they start the job?
There can a couple reasons for this.
1 - The contractor didn't know how to bid your job.
2 - The contractor purposely bid the job lower to get the work.
3 - During the course of the project unforeseen issues came up and require a change order.
