Water Damage...
Water damage is generally caused by water from within the house or business. A broken pipe (supply or drain line), overflow of a plumbing fixture(s), water escaped from an A/C unit, fridge, washer, water heater, garbage disposal or other appliance. It could also be water intrusion from a roof leak, broken window, or other. Think of it as falling water. The one exception that comes to mind is a slab leak. Which is usually caused by broken pipe in the slab/foundation.

When water damage happens it can be overwhelming.
What do you do?
A Use a wet vac, a mop, and bucket, or call in professional help to remove the water. Professionals have water extraction equipment, dry out fans, dehumidifiers, plus other specialized equipment, not to mention the manpower. If water has been standing for more than 24 hours or you're unsure how long, call the pros. You'll want to extracted immediately! Mold starts growing in 48 hours. Depending on how wet the areas are, they may have to cut the walls, remove baseboards, door casing, doors, carpet, flooring (depending on the type), relocate furniture, and whatever else the water could have possibly affected. Then you have different classifications of water that determine the protocols used, for example...toilet water vs. sink water. You may not want to handle this situation yourself if you're unsure of the water source. Your health and safety are a priority.
Water can cause damage to your belongings as well. Water travels and finds it's way into places you would think to look. It can come from storms, appliances, broken pipes, A/C units, overflowing toilets, fire sprinkle systems, roof leaks, etc.
